The bones believed to be those of Saint Mark, were smuggled out of Alexandria during the Muslim conquest of Egypt. They're quite likely to be the remains of Alexander the Great, whose body had been hidden from the Christians for a couple of centuries. Alike Muslims, Christians too destroyed anything that was deemed "pagan" and Alexander's body's reputation and veneration made it a prime target of the Christians.
