I'm confused. Wouldn't the opposite of antipathy (disliking someone) be liking someone? Sympathy is not "liking". It's a different feeling.

Player #38618593, "pathos" meaning "pity" or "sadness" is at the root of both words. It is extended by the prefixes "sym" meaning "with" and "anti" meaning "against".

Player #38618593, Sympathy is caring and that's the antithesis of antipathy. :)

According to Merriam-Webster, "antipathy suggests repugnance, a desire to avoid or reject. Antagonism is when dislike leads to actively engaging with the person, either verbally or physically.

I don't Really understand. I get it - only because I'm reading the explanation & all the comments. But for me to actually use that in conversation? I wouldn't. I would use it all out of context. For a long time I thought empathy was the opposite of sympathy. Ik the meaning of "pathos". Just when I thought I GOT it.... a couple of comments, like comparing the disliking of someone, antipathy - to killing someone, murder.
