The venom is in their saliva and that is how it's introduced into its prey. The animal takes a long time to die though and the lizard simply follows it until it succumbs.

RedSeaDiver, I've watched lots of documentaries on them. People who live around them have to build their houses on stilts so that they are safe from them, although I saw a programme where a dragon actually climbed the steps up to the open door and attacked a man inside
