My father died of asbestosis, in his early 70's, we have to keep in mind many years ago asbestos was everywhere & still is in a lot of old houses..
This is why people are dying now, as the mining companies knew how dangerous it was way back in the 40's 50's but refused to do anything about it..

It is misleading to say “according to legend” about something that is a fact. It is interesting to learn about its Greek origin.

RandalD, sorry but fireman do not wear asbestos anymore, and have not done so for quite a while, due to its dangers. They do wear fireproof suits, but they are not made from asbestos.

Most of the explanation to this question is misleading, how can people learn facts if they are not correct ....

Poorly worded question, "according to legend"? And strange explanation. I'll have to google that claim about it being in firemen's clothes. Doesn't everyone know how dangerous asbestos is?
Player Say what!?
I used to travel the country teaching safety classes for my company. With asbestos, as long as it is not disturbed, it is harmless. One of our own unused buildings sat abandoned for years due to extremely high cost of dismantling as it had asbestos in the ceilings.

I've read that wool doesn't burn, per se, it smolders. It's been recommended to wear it on flights, in case of fire.

Celadon, and wear it when welding...for the same reason.

as a child in the 60s, I would pick the asbestos plate on the ironing board when my grandmother wasn't watching. we were not told then it was dangerous, even though it was known by the authorities.

Player #27643412, did any government make the mining companies pay compensation? probably not.

Firefighter and racecar driver clothing has synthetic materials that are flame resistant. Asbestos can handle MUCH more heat, but it isn't necessary.
There are different types of asbestos. White asbestos was used for brake pads and many other things; it is relatively harmless. Other types cause asbestosis, and could contaminate white asbestos. I remember having flocking (artificial snow) for some childhood Christmas trees that was made with a bad type of asbestos.
