Player #26314849, The difference in frequency is a factor if two and, in equal temperament (used for most modern musical instruments like pianos, keyboards) the intervals are geometrically divided into twelve equal parts (there are twelve notes in the chromatic scale e.g. c, c sharp, d, d sharp etc.). The frequency difference between neighbouring notes is therefore 1.06. Try multiplying 1.06 by itself 12 times and you get 2.

I'm still scratching my head. I understand frequency and hertz, but I always thought it had more to do with timing, since octave refers to eight.
