What is the name of the strait that separates Italy and Sicily?

We may wonder why a bridge has never been built connecting Sicily to the mainland. A few impediments for this: the bottom of the strait is very deep, the currents are very strong, a bridge would impede heavy cargo passage, and among others... the mafia still rules the south of Italy and they make construction contracts nearly impossible.
