Player sergeantmajor, They had to change the name for the American market as it was thought that any movie with the word 'Philosopher' in the title would be looked upon as something to do with dry old philosophy. The Harry Potter books were also adjusted for the American market.

WillyLoman, No sadder than for the hundreds of thousand of families ( like ours) who got back nothing but a name-tag, a scroll, a "death penny" plaque, some medals and a name on the Menin Gate with the others with un- located graves. All because the penny-pinching War Office would only provide one name tag not 2 as in WW II. When one was killed the tag was sent to the regiment, then the family, and the body was quickly buriednearby, , unmarked. When the " clean up" happened and the solo graves were removed to the giant Commonwealth cemetaries, there was no ID, so therefore so many stones say "Known to God". No GPS back then or DNA testing.

Sonny Vistan, I agree with most of the critics, that he wasn't good in his early films, which is why you see the camera constantly turn to Ron for " reaction shots" - all Radcliffe could manage back then was looking amazed! Fortunately that was what was mostly needed from 'Harry' in the early stories, and he learned as he went on. In fact that rather fit the storyline. But it's unlikely he would have even been considered if not for who his father was.

Perfumella, i think it was more that those in other countries would not know (as UK children should) what the Philosophers' Stone was, and why it was so desirable, and sought after by certain people. I'd be interested to hear/see how they changed the books. They could have just added footnotes!
