The house we rented was built during that time period. It had a functional bomb shelter!

I was in the 5th grade and our teacher rolled in a tv and we watched it unfold. Many many years later reflecting on that week I can’t imagine a school allowing something similar today. For myself and most of my classmates we were just confident JFK would “win” the stare down against the evil commies. We just knew that.

Glad it never escalated further. My dad was a Marine, and was on alert to ship out. He never did see live action. Lived a full life until last June, great run.

The crisis occurred after the USA placed nuclear missiles in Turkey as a stance against the USSR and the failed US-backed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. USSR then agreed with Castro (Cuba) to place nuclear missiles in Cuba. While I believe the West has saved us from tyrannic rulers many times, our role in provocating conflict is often omitted .

akeem , I'm sure you're aware of this by now, but the US is NOT trying to put nukes in Ukraine. They won't unless Russia launches an unprovoked nuclear strike on another country, which is still highly unlikely

wasn't born yet sounds pretty scary
akeem
Yet the US is trying to do in Ukraine what they would not allow Russia do in Cuba. I wish no country has nuclear weapon anyway. I wonder why anyone is keeping weapon that can destroy a million lives in one go.

No hotline? Why didn't they just communicate with an email or text? or Facebook or Twitter.

Player Glamingo60, "the evil enemies" it was okay for the US to place their nukes in Turkey BEFORE the Russians placed them in Cuba though wasn't it...Sadly the USA are constantly the aggressors yet are hypocritical with their policies
Donna
History documentaries have proven that the USA was so VERY close to harms way!!! Scary 😨

I turned 13 the second day into the Crisis. It was a tense time and I had a knot in my stomach throughout the negotiations. I was scared we would all die.
