Although the phrase "made in x" is relatively new, many items had their place of origin stamped on them back to antiquity. Just like today certain cities or businesses had reputations for producing particular items in high quality. It was a source of pride, and of course you could charge more. Though of course, stamps could be faked, so also like today you couldn't always believe them!
