For how many years were the Vestals supposed to take a vow of chastity in Ancient Rome?

It was considered extremely bad luck to marry a retired vestal so unless they came from a well to do family they ended their lives living in poverty. Any breech of the rules eg. losing their virginity, would result in a death sentence usually by being walled up alive.
