Which insect is expected to appear in swarms in the USA in the spring of 2021?
Correct answer: Periodical cicada

Paulus of Tarsus
To explain their cycle better:
One particularly interesting fact about periodical cicadas is their highly synchronized, long life cycles, with some species emerging after 13 or 17 years underground. These insects are known for their massive, synchronized emergences, where millions of individuals emerge from the soil at the same time to mate. This strategy, called predator satiation, helps them overwhelm predators and ensure some survive to reproduce.

Although I have read they only emerge every so often, I also know it's not always true. Almost every summer I hear them in my Wisconsin woods. I know their sound very well.

Player Say what!?
Love the last sentence in the description. We don't have cicadas out west, darn it. I'd love to experience it at least once.

They were louder than I ever remember from past periods in the state of Indiana

I remember a huge swarm of beetle like insects just showing up out of the blue. It was about 1970 so the time line matches this. I never had any understanding of how that was. This may be the reason.
