What is the most common snake in America?

I purposely designed my garden with features that would attract garter snakes, not because I'm a big fan of reptiles.... but because the little snakes naturally protect my family & pets from viruses & parasites (ie. Lyme disease, hantavirus, tapeworms, lungworms, rodent botflies, etc.); while simultaneously ridding my garden of the nasty disease carrying vermin (ie. slugs, snails, mice, voles, etc.) that would destroy it. I definitely prefer the harmless little snakes that run away when they see us, to critters carrying potentially dangerous pathogens into my yard every night... but to each their own.

Me too! I loved finding them in my grandmother's garden, so I could bring them water and lettuce. I'm sure they were thrilled!

I caught a really big one when I was a kid in Wisconsin. I took it home and put it in a fish tank that had 1/4" screen as front of the tank was broken. I woke to my mother screaming (she hates & fears snakes) . in the night, that big snake had babies, which escaped .about 50 to 75 baby snakes were slithering down the stairs man was she passed. I was amazed. Sorry, mom.

Our lamps weren't hot enough and the snake got too cold poor baby. He was so sweet always looked right at me . I really miss him. His name was Salazar.

I am a teacher and I had one in a terrarium in my fourth grade classroom. I would let the kids take him out and handle him, of course under close supervision by me. I remember one student of mine who was terrified of the snake at the beginning of the year, and by the end of the year she asked to hold him. all the time!

Melode, My dream snake as a pet. constrictors usually don't bite, yes they wrap for warmth or to kill prey. How did the cold get it? Did your electric go out or something? So very sad.

WE HAD A YELLOW BANANA PYTHON BUT LOST HIM LAST YEAR TO THE COLD. HE WAS SO SWEET! HE NEVER BIT ANYONE LIKED TO WRAP HIMSELF AROUND YOUR ARM.

Almost ran into a 6 foot cotton mouth from the creek near my house. I was in a hurry out the door to go the store, and noticed movement in my peripheral vision. I looked down to see the snake less than 3 feet away and froze. It already knew I was approaching, and starting slowly moving away. I then went back in house to give it all the time it wanted to move on. After I calmed down, I decided I like the snakes, because they eat rodents.

Gartersnakes consist of many species of snakes in the Genus Thamnophis, including ribbonsnakes. Some species are extremely common while some are endangered species. The answer makes it sound like it is a single species.
