Lived in Saranac Lake 7 miles from Placid. That town was crazy during the Olympics. Coolest thing ever. Main Street was pedestrian only. Was one massive party. You will never see a small town like Lake Placid ever get to host an Olympics again. They also hosted the 1932 Winter Olympic Games.

I remember this clearly, and when Al Michaels asked the question "do you believe in miracles"? It was quite a feat to defeat the Russians as they were considered "professional amateurs". The Russians played together for years, whereas the Americans had only months of training together.
