What is the acre (a unit of land measurement) based upon?
Correct answer: The area a team of eight oxen could plow in one day

Wow!! I never knew that! All these years working with acres in my job, and I never heard of or thought about what an acre originated from. This app is great!

Hairslinger, a team of 8 cannot plow any faster than a team of four or even two. The speed is limited by the human working the plow behind the team. They don't use all eight at the same time. Depending on how many you have, you use 2 or 4, then swap them out, thereby allowing more to get done by not having down time.

Moray, you are actually correct! oxen cannot plough without the guidance and help of a human being. several animals can be used at once. but the walking pace of the person guiding the plough is the restraining factor. More animals mean more horsepower (!) which is required for more difficult conditions, but the walking pace of the human.

Johnjacobjingleheimer, good someone thought about it!

Very interesting. I wonder how land was measured

I heard somewhere, that it's how much land a man could plow in one day, not oxen,,,back to the dictionary for me.

Hairslinger, agree that a team of 8 oxen is not realistic. maybe an ox or team of 2 could plow an acre a day.
