I used the stick method to see how much fuel was in the wings when I was learning to fly in an old Cessna 152. Good times.

Lorraine, Fuel gauges were put on fuel tanks around 1912, but you had to get out of the car and walk around the back to check it. Electric fuel gauges were conveniently mounted on the dashboard in 1925. (This may not be absolutely precise info as it was taken from a quick internet search, but you get the general timeframe.)
