What does the name of the Mexican volcano Popocatépetl mean?
Correct answer: Smoking Mountain
Timoteo
Poca means "smokes" and the extra "po" at the front is an intensifier which means "smokes a lot".
We live about 60 kms NE of Popocatépetl. Most people just call it Popo. The people who live on the slopes of the volcano call it "don Goyo". Goyo is a nickname for Gregorio. The volcano spews smoke almost daily and ash quite regularly. Several times a year it belches lava which can be seen at night from our house. I think (hope) we're far enough away to be out of danger if it has a big eruption.
