Which country is known as the Land of White Elephants?

I believe that because they are sacred they cannot be used for work . So giving a white elephant meant the recipient had all the costs of feeding and looking after the elephant , but could not get any real benefit. Hence “white elephant “ - something which will cost a lot of money but is no real use .

sadly in the two and half years I lived in Thailand, I never saw an elephant respected or treated well. come to that I never saw any animal shown respect.

oh my perhaps Elephants were not put on the Earth ...." to be of use ...." ? they are magnificent intelligent Sentient Beings that have as much Right to be in their Natural State as humans
