1 diode by itself can be a half-wave rectifier (allows a positive wave, blocks a negative wave). A bridge (full-wave) rectifier needs 4 diodes: a diode for each (2-wire) power connection, plus a diode for each crossover/reverse connection.

40 years ago while working for Western Electric, (Bell System) I had to take a basic electricity course and learned about diodes. now all I remember anymore is the color code for diodes. The class got progressively harder and harder which gave me an appreciation for electricians.

1 diode by itself is not a rectifier. 4 diodes connected together in the correct configuration will rectify Alternating Current (A/C) into Direct Current (D/C).
