Which of these ingredients must be used to cook the Russian soup "shchi"?

My grandmother always made this soup when I was growing up. It was very tasty and filling. Most of my moms family came from Russia so I mused to this kind of cooking.

“Shchi da kasha – pisha nasha” - cabbage soup and porridge are our food.

So delicious! A superb Russian dish.

I presume it tastes better than it sounds. I like cabbage but am not fond of Sauerkraut.
