Runes are which of these?

The choices given are misleading. Are runes what the symbols are called or are runes the stones with the symbols on them? Or is it interchangeable? Would I ever find runes on a roadsign? in a magazine? on my tv screen?

Some people use rune stones or symbols for divination.
