I think the Americans shorten "American Football " to "football". Hence calling football "soccer" to avoid confusion. Those countries that can actually play football call it "football". lol

Here in New Zealand, soccer is soccer, rugby union is rugby, rugby league is called league and American/Canadian football is often referred to as gridiron.

I started playing soccer in 1970 in Manhattan Beach, CA, and had coaches from England, Brazil, Ecuador, Scotland, Argentina and Italy. I came to know it as Fùtbol, the Spanish name for the sport.
