One "variation" on the ugly story would be "The Sissy Duckling", (2002 book) (1999 TV movie). IF you have LGBTQ "issues",(which is your own perception) this book is not for you. However, it really is a great story of perseverance & wits & more, (spoilers!), & the points are clearly made & it's Wunderbar!! Loved the movie, wonderful cast!
