How many cities were united to become the city of Budapest?

I thought it was only two, Buda on one side of the river and Pest on the other?

I always thought it came from 2 cities, not knowing that (new) Buda and OldBuda had different centers. Plus I tend to think of Istan and Bul.

RedSeaDiver, Agreed; two - Buda and Pest - other than the name of the original Roman settlement, which simply refers to the same area, no third name is mentioned in the answer.

Panathinaikos, although I’ve not yet been to Budapest I’d imagine Prague would run it pretty close.
