If you are crossing the Panama canal from the Atlantic to the Pacific, in which direction are you headed?

I think that this is bit of a trick question if you are in Central America then the Pacific is to the west and the Atlantic so I would say if you travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific you are travelling east to west no matter the route you take?
