Topsy the elephant was electrocuted at Luna Park Zoo on Coney Island in 1903. Captured on film by Thomas Edison, the event was one of a string of animal executions Edison staged to discredit Tesla's alternating current.
It was barbaric and pointless. Direct current would require a lot of power (fuel) to produce a voltage at a certain distance, much more than alternating current.

Tesla put in a bid to use Niagara falls for hydroelectric ac power. edison's bid was for DC. tesla won with the financial backing of George Westinghouse (who also stole some of his ideas and patented them as his own)
