How many countries are permanent members of the UN Security Council?

The child of many generations born in the US, not of Indian or Brazilian/Portuguese descent, but, "In this day and age, why are India and Brazil not Permanent UN members (along with either Nigeria or RSA)?" I know, Modi and Bolsonaro both have their issues, but it's the people and what they represent that are important--1.3 BN people in India's case, and we need South American representation, too.
