It must depend on how one defines a dialect and how one defines a language. Listening to Scottish fishermen on TV, I could scarcely understand what they were saying sometimes, but they were speaking English. I understand the German language, but not understand some local dialects there at all. If dialects are part of a language, there can't be hundreds of languages in one country.
