When did Oceania become a continent?

A continent is a large unbroken landmass surrounded by water. Oceania is a region, Australia is the continent in that region. This is not a legitimate question.

This is not what I was taught. Of the seven continents one was Australia.

Oceania is described as a geographical region in most of the English-speaking world, but outside of the English-speaking world, Oceania is described as one of the continents.
