To Brian I - if you really must copy your explanations verbatim from Wikipedia - as this is - then at least you should check them; you missed out the word cornstarch in the recipe. Other recipes use ground almonds or flour. The result is more sponge than custard, whatever word Wikipedia uses. Bakewell tart is a pastry tart, with a layer of jam and almond sponge topping. If King cake has layers then it, too, would have stiffening in it - custard layers would melt together.
