In Greek mythology, who was responsible for the abduction of Persephone which led to the Earth's four seasons?

The six months of winter was because Persephone actually ate six pomegranate seeds and Zeus decreed that because of that Persephone should live for six months every year in the kingdom of the dead

Nothing against people who are into Greek mythology, but I just don't get it. What is the benefit of learning about myths? It must just be the entertainment value. There's nothing wrong with that.
