What name is given to the system in Medieval Europe, in which people served nobles in return for use of land?

The serfs or peasants could not leave the area without permission from the lord. They were practically unpaid bonded slaves and also had to fight when required. This changed when the plague reduced the population by half and workers became sought after and started to get paid for their labour.
