What is a social system in which women hold the primary power positions called?

I was tempted to say anarchy, but was afraid my wife would beat me over the head, ...and for good reason!

In Kerala, India there are matriarchs who head the family. The father is just around as required. Property goes from mother to daughter and mum’s brother ensures the transition..is what I have heard.
