UnopposedExpert34755, I just watched a story last week on how the planet's magnetic north pole is actually shifting much faster than scientists ever expected it to. So they are going to have to change all of the maps and shift our GPS coordinates to keep everyone and everything going to the right places, or something to that effect.

UnopposedExpert34755, not the nmp (north magnetic pole), the ncp (north celestial pole). There is a difference

This is the second question about Polaris and, both times, that scene from Muppet Treasure Island came to mind. The one where Long John (Tim Curry) is having a moment with Jim (Kevin Bishop), and asks if he can find North, to which he replies that it's easy and pulls out his father's compass. Anyway, LJ points to the night sky and says, "That be Polaris, the North Star." (I haven't watched that movie in a long time, so this might not be 100% accurate, but you get the gist. Also, obviously the bulk of my knowledge is about movies...)

Not sure I get this one. The earth tilts around 23 degrees as it spins throughout the year (hence seasons). How is it always in the same place relative? Maybe because its straight above the north Pole hence no tilt. Just answering my own brain here happy to be corrected.

Popowo lies on the north coast of the country, so the celestial north Pole to me is Lech Walesa. Ouch!

The reason Polaris doesn't appear to move is because it is almost perfectly in line with the earth's northern axis. truth is, it does spin about 1.3 degrees, but the diameter is so small it appears still to the naked eye. Polaris will also only be our north star for another 12,000 years or so before precession causes Vega to take its place.
