The cleanest in the old times were the Vikings. They tried to wash daily and, believe it or not, held women as equal to men. This was not the norm back in the day!

Blinky, as in Japan, they most likely cleaned it off BEFORE entering the bath. otherwise there would be no point, you would be dirtier after the bath than before.
