Horace L. Hunley, Cowper P. Coles and John Day all have a shared event in their lives, what was it?
Correct answer: All killed by their own inventions.

I wish they had included details about WHY all these inventions failed so miserably, especially that last one.

my friend , Ralph Wilbanks found the Hunley submarine. He is one of the most amazing people and I was lucky enough to work with him in Japan searching for a US submarine that was sunk near Nagasaki

shell
how awful can you imagine that last 1 don't bear thinking about

Clown Boss
According to the pdf linked to the Wikipedia article, "At 130 feet Day's boat would have been subjected to 60 pounds per square inch and it is highly probable that the Maria broke up long before she ever reached the bottom of the sea."

Player #25232914, if you tap at the bottom where it says Wikipedia link comes up with more information.

Shelby Johnson
I hate to say it, but sounds like a good movie plot. With either the character indeed trapped on the ocean floor in his invention which is successfulin keeping out the water, or the perils he had to overcome as his invention begins to fail while dropping to the cold, dark, ocean floor!! Hmm movie gold?

I only picked the right answer because, shame on me, I thought it was the funniest.

I would like to know more. the last one is a terrible way to die, the others also. Their early work were stepping stones for other inventors to fix the issues and build better safer ones.

Anya
What horrible deaths. You just pray that they went fast. All having to do with water too.

Miss Sue
Wisenheimer , That was such a freak accident IMO. It doesn't make it less tragic though. Very sad.

Also the guy who invented the Segway.

Player #25232914, 2 x 10 ton weights or 20 tons pulling down and expecting to descend to 130 feet (43m). He should’ve calculated the correct amount of weight/ballast before attempting the experiment.

Gargoyling
Player #25232914, likely to have been a miscalculation of the reduction in volume, halving the volume of air for every 10m depth, not leaving much room for habitation, and probably sinking the float at the end of the mooring line. would not have k own about the bends either!

srgan85
At least John Day had a relaxing one in his hammock ...

MootListing6, that's super cool

Terri
Player #94103631, Yeah, it’s so sad 😞

Buzzkill
Player #25232914, If you can get your hands on a people's chronological order you can look up all kinds of fact : exactly how many people died inventing things like the submarine. Nobel prize is based on Artur Nobel inventing dynamite but doesn't apologize for killing hundreds of people doing so .

Phoenix
Player #25232914, given that John Day used 2 10-ton weights to sink the chamber, I'd say that that was the reason why he didn't come back up.

Cowper Phipps-Coles was a paternal ancestor of mine.

The Hunley sunk with all hands lost 3 times. I would have stopped trying earlier, but that's just me.

Player #13752648
Player #30304101, but have they never tried to retrieve the last one at least, like just to know exactly what, how and why ?

Player #47348939
Shelby Johnson, there is a movie on Prime video, I think, called "Black Sea". The plot is different, but the outcome is the same. Really good underwater flick.
