Who plays Doctor Martin Ellingham in the British television show 'Doc Martin'?

I enjoy watching the Doc Martin series. The character might be grumpy, but he's a brilliant Doctor and always has time for people. I wish that was the case for real. I think it still is in less populated areas of Britain. The area where the show is set is really beautiful.
