Tornadoes have been documented in all 50 U.S. states. The Enhanced Fujita Scale (EF) was developed in 2007, after decades use of the Fujita Scale, to better describe strength of a tornado's winds based on modernized structure damage. The scale was named after Dr. Ted Fujita, a University of Chicago professor, who developed the original scale. The first EF5 (highest of the scale) tornado struck Greensburg, Kansas in May 2007, a nearly 2 mile wide wedge that flattened 95% of the town and killed 11 people.

I wish there was comment as to why the US experiences so many. I know it's the geography or currents, but would like more detail. Just the facts!

Tanya, USA has mountains to the west. mountains to the eastern states , it’s like a hallway or large trench in the middle of the USA. runs north to south,, cold air from Canada rushes down the trench meets hot air coming up from the southern Gulf, these currents collide and spinning in some places causing the dangerous tornadoes, wow ,mostly from springtime to autumn but can happen anytime,,

Topeka, KS.... check out the F-5 that went through here in June 1966..... it touched down in the southwest corner of town jumped the mound landed and made a pathway through Topeka on the ground all the way across town a mile wide making a road or landing strip to the northeast side to Billiards Airport... flatten everything in it path... there is no such tornado strong or violent.... they all are very dangerous.... capital journal has pictures of what Topeka looked like afterwards... Wednesday, June 8, 1966 out break of tornado activities

phroggylowflier1966, used to watch them form over the balmorhea mountains and disipitate, one didn't and headed straight for us, ran like the Dickens. another one hit in Pecos and split our tree, a shovel and a snake was inside the tree trunk and the snake was still alive scariest thing I've ever seen. I also lived in Manhattan Ks and a tornado hit, found my friends car in Topeka, hail damaged a whole car lot, but I bought a brand new car for $200 had to replace the windshield and popped the dents out with snow salt, sold the car for $3,000.

jane083, you're very lucky for sure. that was the worse I've ever seen. I remember being at home in Kansas City, we had a tornado warning but nothing never touched down. Later on the news tells us about Joplin. That was a shock to us all.

Tanya, the North Atlantic current drives our weather patterns and it is the strongest and fastest current. So that is why tornadoes in other parts of the world are less common. Other parts of the world do have them, just far less common and usually seen during monsoon/tsunami season.

Tanya, I'm from tornado Alley, KCMO, and Im not sure why, I always assumed it was because it's so flat but I just watched a documentary on tornadoes today and they were talking about tornado alley and how there are tornadoes that have smaller ones inside of them...WTH!?!

A lesser known fact is that the UK has a greater density of tornadoes per sq km than the USA. Of course, the UK is a lot smaller than the USA, so less in total. UK twisters are also usually weaker too.
