Quite often, the VC was awarded posthumously. For him to have been awarded this twice, while alive, is very rare.

Wozza, A lot more were awarded in WWI. Capt Noel Chavasse was a doctor who volunteered and got them for saving lives in No Man's Land, dying of wounds after earning the second. At his funeral his father, an Anglican Bishop, said: " Until now my son was known as the son of the Bishop of Liverpool; from now on I will be proud to be known as the father of Capt. Chavasse".
