I knew the answer. Not sure if it was from reading Thor comics as a kid, or watching the Vikings TV show.

J,
He had two ravens, Hugin and Munin.
They were in effect his spies.
Hugin represented "memory" and Munin represented "thought"
They went out into the world to explore and tell Odin what was going on.
Incidentally, two of the Tower of London's ravens are named Hugin and Munin.

Odin one eye with his pet raven, Norse mythology and the sagas that were passed down by word of mouth are totally amazing and are interlinked with the old Germanic and English myths, Marvel did a brilliant job of introducing the Gods to a whole new generation.
