My singer/songwriter brother and I just recently discussed this song and I had asked him why this song is SO good. "beautiful melody, beautiful storytelling lyrics and the perfect tempo." Yup, that sums it up!

I was a huge Glen Campbell fan back in those days. The question's reference to the power company is wrong (given the "singing in the wires" lyric), but corrected in the explanation. Still, it's unlikely that the county would have been running the phone company, Bell pretty much had a monopoly on that. It's a great song either way. "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is another, though "Galveston" was my favorite back then.

Player Say what!?, Plus, it isn't obscene or immoral, and features neither crime nor tragedy. Just an ordinary person, dealing with a situation anyone can identify with. Combined with that beautiful melody!
