Tony Wright claimed the world sleep deprivation record in May 2007 with 266 continuous hours of sleeplessness. Better explanation: In 1964, Randy Gardner broke the world record for the longest amount of time a person could go without sleep by staying awake for 11 days and 24 minutes (264.4 hours): Experiment: Gardner, a 17-year-old high school student from San Diego, California, conducted the experiment as part of a science fair project. He was monitored by doctors, including Stanford sleep researcher Dr. William C. Dement, and two of his classmates, Bruce McAllister and Joe Marciano Jr. Record: Gardner's record broke the previous record of 260 hours held by Tom Rounds. Effects: During the experiment, Gardner experienced mood swings, memory loss, slurred speech, hallucinations, and trouble with coordination. Aftermath: After the experiment, Gardner was taken to a naval hospital where doctors monitored his brain waves. He slept for 14 hours and then woke up to use the bathroom. Legacy: -Gardner's record attempt became one of the most well-documented cases of sleep deprivation. However, Guinness World Records stopped accepting new attempts in 1997 due to the health risks of sleep deprivation. In 1967 the record was broken once more, by Charles E. Christensen (another 23-year old radio DJ!). 52-year-old South African housewife Bertha Van Der Merwe ended the decade with the title after going 282 hours 55 minutes (11 days 18 hours 55 minutes) without sleep in 1969.
