this answer is incorrect, Prince never used his last name and certainly not on this particular work. he was either that unpronounceable symbol or he was Prince

Cookie Bean, Prince was indeed a great musician, singer, dancer, could play many different instruments better than his band members, but, he did not write, Purple Rain. Lisa, his lead guitarist wrote the song, And Prince, with his Father’s help arranging and improved it for Prince to record, it became a number one hit single, number one album and number one movie, all in one month, the only person that did that, was Prince,,very interesting and talented man , for sure,,
