What does an Apgar score evaluate?

For those who are interested, Atul Gawande, MD, MPH wrote an interesting (to me) article on medical science's historical improvements in infant and mother survivability in difficult child deliveries. (See "The Score" published in The New Yorker magazine.) Virginia Apgar figures prominently in that article.

As a nurse in the delivery room, assigning the APGAR score was one of my major tasks. It was considered to be biased if the obstetrician or anesthesiologist did it.
