I've had it memorized since I was about 12, from building a plastic model kit of the battleship USS New Jersey that had little paper signal flags of the alphabet. I didn't know/remember about the spelling of "Alfa" though or "Juliett" though.

Wisenheimer, From watching the TV show "Adam 12" I think that may be what the LA police were using for Z, along with (A)dam, (L)incoln, etc. AFAIK, the US army had one in the WWII era with (A)ble, (B)aker, etc. They may have used (Z)era as well. I don't know about international air traffic control,. but I'd guess many organizations have adopted the NATO standard these days.

Artie, I remember hiding under our desks during air raid drills. Sadly today, it's active shooter drills and the likelihood of the event happening are infinitely greater.
