Paulus of Tarsus, I daresay most people don't know what the words are. We commonly use initialisms or acronyms, pronouncing the letters. The influence of Latin on our language is fascinating, e.g. (sorry) "plumbing" derived from the Latin word for "lead" IIRC. Perhaps the longest Latin phrase I ever learned might apply here.

I study Latin as a hobby. It bothers me when people say i.e. pronouncing each letter ("eye, eeh"). It stands for "id est" meaning "that is." Why then not just pronounce it as id est?
