What is a Japanese sword typically made of bamboo used for practice and competition in 'kendo' called?

I used to play Kendo. The Shinai may well be safer but getting hit by one really hurts. Even with all the armour (Bogu). I've even been knocked out on several occasions. However, no serious injuries!
