Love "The Hobbit"! Bilbo is intelligent, caring, and humble. He learned that he could be stronger than he realized.

mesne, Glad to hear that. I read the hobbit to my daughter as bedtime story with sounds and everything. she still remarks on it now years later.

Tolkien is a GIANT of world literature. His books are the BEST. That is if you can get through some of them. “The Silmarillion” falls in this category. Had to restart reading it multiple times.

Lionessa, Tolkien first told the story 'off the cuff' to his sons as a bedtime tale. Christopher (allegedly) began challenging his father about various discrepancies in the telling, so J.R.R. began writing and refining the epic that would eventually become the penultimate fantasy series of all time. Hence, perhaps, why it was and is considered a children's tale...

I first read, "The Hobbit" when I was seventeen. I have always thought of it as the necessary starting point to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. I have never before heard it referred to as "a children's book."
