"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is one of the most-banned books in American schools. It is appalling to see how many books are withheld from American children. Book publishers are actively fighting this. Penguin Random House seems to be leading the charge. They are setting up " Little libraries" in rural communities to provide citizens access to books that have been banned. "Charlotte's Web" has been banned in Kansas because some Christian group thinks talking animals are blasphemous. WHAT? A book that has taught tens of millions of children about love, sacrifice, and death, is suddenly "blasphemous." IMO, religion and politics have no place in the education of children. I wonder what's next on the chopping block, "Where the Red Fern Grows"? I don't think that religious beliefs should have the power to censor education. I pity religions that seem to have ignorance as a requirement for membership.

Lionessa, Librarians, particularly in public libraries, defend books people want to ban and some have even lost their jobs doing so. They help keep our First Amendment alive.

Lionessa, I agree that religion has no place in public education. This trend to ban books that are contrary or controversial is, I believe, just that, a trend. Those who are against it, should voice themselves, teachers and students. A teacher should choose the curriculum and if it is controversial, then explain and discuss. Don't pretend it never was written, especially if widely accepted for years back into history.

Lionessa, I remember people wanting to ban Mary Poppins because "it's sacrilege to show such fantasy". But telling a story about a guy who lived for 3 days in a whale's stomach is not?!
