Why did filming on the movie "Cast Away" directed by Robert Zemeckis stop for a year?

Great movie, great actor and great emotions running through the story.

After Tom Hanks, the next famous character is "Wilson".

Not. being a filmmaker, I could be wrong. Wouldn't it have made more sense to have him be skinny and have the beard and start filming, then wait a short time to let him enjoy eating up a storm? They always film out of sequence anyway.

one of my favourite flicks.

I liked the movie. a little like Robinson Caruso but the ending was a disappointment. I wanted it to be more positive. it left the viewer needing closure.
