Im honored to own 100 acres in West Virginia. It is this beautiful. John Denver died while piloting his own plane off the coast of California. There is no other song I know that better describes any other state than Counry Roads. Masterpiece! RIP

His mother lived just a couple blocks from me and his memorial service was at a huge church a mile away in Aurora Colorado. If that picture was indeed taken in WV, I'd love to go there.

There is evidence he never visited WV but he did visit western VA in the Shenandoah Valley. So likely it was VA all along.

Donna, Saw a little story documenting the origin of the song. The back-up singers wrote it but didn't quite finish it. They sang it for John, he tweeked it, they liked the way he sounded and agreed to let him record it.

Bill Danoff said the original inspiration for the song was Clopper Road in Gaithersburg, Maryland. It reminded him of the country roads of his home state of Massachusetts when he was young.
In fact, he originally wanted to write the song about Massachusetts, but couldn't get the cadence to work and since he liked the sound of the words "Shenandoah" and "Blue Ridge Mountains" in the verses, he matched them to an area on the map - West Virginia.
Danoff, Nivert, and Denver collaborated on writing the song to it's finished form, though none of them had been to WV themselves.

Wayne, since you mentioned that, the Shenandoah River is entirely within Virginia a good chunk of the Blue Ridge Mountains, make up the Shenandoah Valley.
